Visual arts graduates present new works at the Jewish Museum


Upcoming Visual Arts MFA graduates will exhibit new works of video, sound and performance art at a day-long event at the Jewish Museum titled In response: Jonas Mekas.

The students were tasked with producing new works of art that respond to the Jewish Museum’s current exhibition, Jonas Mekas: The camera was still rollingthe first American museum survey of the Lithuanian-born artist who helped shape the avant-garde in New York.

The exhibition reviews Mekas’ 70-year career and includes 11 films presented in an immersive environment, unpublished photographs and archival documents. His work was deeply influenced by his experience as a refugee; explore the relationship between exile and creativity, loss, memory and the desire for a home.

Featured MFA graduates in Visual Arts include: Kaela Mei-Chee Chambers, Fadl Fakhouri, Linnea Gad (with Will Epstein), Elisheva Gavra (with Layla Klinger); Jacq Bosquets; Erin Holland; Julia Jalowiec (with Josh Jalowiec); Char Jéré and Meaghan Elyse Lueck; Sophie Kovel; John Thomas Levee; Alison Nguyen; and Viviane Vivas (with Claire Gendler).

In response: Jonas Mekas is free to attend with RSVP and opens Sundays at 6:30 p.m.
